Say it with me now:

abaldwin360:

thisgingersnapsback:

  • Dr. George Tiller’s killing was not justifiable homicide, it was murder.
  • Blowing up abortion clinics is terrorism.
  • Defacing and covering abortion clinics in graffiti is vandalism.
  • Chanting “You’re next!” at doctors and clinic administrators is threatening them.
  • Preventing patients from entering a clinic by shouting at them, distracting them, walking in front of them, blocking their way with your bodies, or preventing them from exiting their cars is harassment.

You’re not a good person if you in any way, shape or form support, defend, or ignore any of these actions. Stop deluding yourself.

Remember that woman who had the dead fetus inside her when you were escorting and went to the clinic to have it removed and how the protesters tried to keep her from getting out of the car, then tired to keep her from getting into the clinic?

That story has really stuck with me, it displayed just how disgusting these people really are.

Sad but true Abortion has killed 14 million black babies since 1970.

Somehow this was considered to be a racist billboard and taken down even though what they’re saying is true.

It’s racist because it frames the Black community, and black women* in particular, as violent and dangerous. Are the people who made the billboard concerned about the black community or are they just playing on stereotypes of POC in order to achieve their ends? They are attempting to elicit sympathy and concern for black children while simultaneously vilifying black women (and other people who are able to get pregnant). That’s why it’s racist.
Another problem with this billboard is that it makes it seem as if black women* are being somehow targeted for abortion services. This is ridiculous. It’s true that in the US black women* are disproportionately represented when it comes to abortion. But what anti-abortion advocates either haven’t seemed to figure out (or hope that the general public isn’t able to figure out) is that there is an important intervening variable they’re ignoring: economic status. People with lower socioeconomic status and less stable financial situations are more likely to choose abortion due to the fact that they are unable to afford a(nother) pregnancy or child.
Is there racism involved here? Certainly. And though it may be reflected in the racial and ethnic breakdown abortion rates, it would be an incorrect conclusion to label the existence of safe, legal abortion as the problem. The problem lies in the institutional and systemic racism that keeps black people (and black women especially) in poverty. Of course it’s sad when a person has to terminate an otherwise wanted pregnancy because they can’t afford it or afford to take care of the resulting child. But the way to fix this is not by diverting attention from the real problem by creating a false enemy out of abortion— it’s by attacking the systems and institutions that cause a person to be lacking financial resources in the first place. This includes attacking institutional and systemic racism, misogyny, ciscentrism, and transphobia.
side note: I can’t find the article at the moment, but there’s an interview with the mom of the girl in the picture where she says she was upset that her daughter’s image was being used in this way.

are there really people who don’t find this propaganda racist as hell? It’s too hot today — reblogging for commentary.

Awesome:

Trent Franks, the Arizona Republican who proposed a 20-week abortion ban in Washington, DC and then barred DC’s pro-choice female delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton from speaking out against the measure has a new problem on his hands: a flood of DC residents who are bringing their municipal complaints directly to the Congressman, who they’re calling “Mayor.” From potholes to rodent problems to public transportation complaints, DC residents have followed Franks’ lead and begun funneling their problems to him rather than the city’s own government. […]
The protest was a cooperative effort between Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington DC and a group called DC Vote, which aims to secure representation for DC in Congress.
Today, about 50 DC residents eagerly waited outside of Rep. Franks’ door, ready to let “Mayor Franks” know how he could make his newly claimed city better. According to the Huffington Post’s Laura Bassett, some carried plastic rats, some toted pictures of the potholes they wanted Mayor Franks to fill, and some brought disputed parking tickets.

Do not mess with the uteri of DC.

woahitstess asked: “Coming off anon to ask you again if you can please help me find a credible source for the 10,000 deaths per year from botched abortion before it was made legal? If you can't help me that's fine, but please respond! Thank you!”

This article mentions that the figure was probably extrapolated from data collected in NC. I can’t find the exact study that it comes from though. If anyone has any information, please let me know.

samsonismydog:

I am reposting this because I had made it slightly private before. I think we need to share our stories, our rage, our passion and our fight for women’s rights with each other. Send me your story at shookw@gmail.com and I will post it on my tumblr. Write me about the process, what you felt, who supported you, why you took advantage of your right to choose.. anything. We need to make it known that we are not alone!

Thursday, May 3rd:

I recently discovered that I am four weeks pregnant. At first I was shocked, then I was scared, then I felt ashamed.. and now I am enraged. I think that unwed pregnancies need to stop having such a fucking taboo attached to them. I don’t know how our culture can shove sex in our faces through food and clothing ads, television shows, movies and the like.. and then shame us when we .. what? get pregnant? the result of having sex.. which is encouraged in so many aspects of our lives. I need to talk to other women about this. Other women need to talk to other women about this.. Today at planned parenthood I learned that 1 in every 3 women will have an abortion. 1 IN EVERY 3 WOMEN WILL HAVE AN ABORTION. I was so fucking shocked to hear that because YOU WOULD NEVER GUESS. PART OF TEACHING PEOPLE ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS IS LETTING OTHERS KNOW WHO IS TAKING ADVANTAGE OF REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS. I want to call my dad and say, “Yo, I’m getting an abortion. A vote for Romney is a vote against me having the future I want.. are you ready to be a grandfather?”

Everything is pretty fucked up, but I am so grateful that I am able to have choice. It is time for me to fight back against this shame, speak out about what I am going through and teach others that they are not alone in this experience. Lezzzdoooit together.

*if you don’t have a story but want to support the women who do, please reblog and pass this on.

[Cis women are not the only people who can become pregnant and/or need abortions.]

I think sharing and telling stories about unplanned/unwanted pregnancies and abortions is the only way we’re going to get rid of the stigma surrounding it. I think if more people knew just how many people around them were affected by this, the shit Republicans are trying to pull around the country wouldn’t fly.
